Teaching Artist Statement
As a poet and writing instructor, I lead my students to places of curiosity and investigation. By writing and discussing contemporary poets combined with traditional and new poetic forms, my students find comfort in developing their poetic voices, writing poems that speak to their interests (as opposed to what they think people want to read), and learning to engage in helpful and constructive feedback.
Finally, poetry is not just about what is on the page but the art of performance. I embed performance techniques in my classes that are unique to each student’s personality type and universal for connecting with diverse audiences.
